Transcendental Meditation — explained simply

What is TM?

And why is it different?

A simple, natural, effortless technique practiced 20 minutes twice a day — with eyes closed, sitting comfortably. No concentration. No control. Just deep rest for the mind.

How TM differs from other techniques

Other techniques

Requires concentration or focus
Involves controlling your thoughts
Guided by an app or voice
Works at the surface of the mind
Needs discipline to maintain
Produces theta brainwaves (4–6 Hz)

Transcendental Meditation

Completely effortless — no focus needed
Thoughts come and go naturally
Taught personally, one-on-one
Transcends thought altogether
Enjoyable — people look forward to it
Produces alpha-1 brainwaves (8–10 Hz)
"In this meditation we do not concentrate or control the mind. We let the mind follow its natural instinct toward greater happiness, and it goes within and gains bliss consciousness in the being." — Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Lake Louise, Canada, 1968

“TM gives me an island of calm in the midst of so much turbulence.”
— Sir Paul McCartney, 50+ years of TM practice

Deeper Sleep research chart
Research finding 1 of 4
Better quality sleep
TM practice significantly reduces stress-related hormones including cortisol, which directly affects sleep quality. It also increases serotonin — the neurotransmitter that regulates mood and sleep-wake cycles. Healthy serotonin levels promote deeper, more restful sleep, which enhances overall wellbeing and resilience to illness.

Younger Biological Age research chart
Research finding 2 of 4
A younger biological age
A study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that TM and TM-Sidhi practitioners had a biological age 5 years younger than non-meditators, and long-term practitioners showed a biological age up to 12 years younger. The deep rest produced during TM allows the body to repair and regenerate — reducing the physiological markers that accumulate from chronic stress.

EEG brainwave coherence research chart
Research finding 3 of 4
Unique brainwave coherence
EEG studies confirm that TM produces a distinctive pattern of alpha-1 brainwaves (8–10 Hz) and global brain coherence — meaning different regions of the brain begin working together in a highly integrated way. This state is not found in other meditation techniques. It is associated with sharper thinking, improved focus, creativity, and emotional resilience — and continues beyond the meditation session itself.

Improved relationships research chart
Research finding 4 of 4
Improved work & personal relationships
A prospective study of TM practitioners in two occupational settings found significant reductions in anxiety, job tension, insomnia, and fatigue — alongside improvements in health, employee effectiveness, job satisfaction, and relationships. As inner stress dissolves, the quality of human connection naturally improves.

Questions people always ask
Click any question to read the answer
Is TM a religion or belief system? +
No. TM is a completely secular technique with no philosophy, religion, or lifestyle requirement. You don't need to believe in it, change your diet, or adopt any particular worldview. People of all religions — and of no religion — practice TM. It simply works, regardless of belief.
What if I can't stop thinking? +
TM doesn't ask you to stop thinking. Thoughts come and go naturally during practice — and that is perfectly fine. In fact, it's part of how the technique works. You don't fight thoughts, control them, or push them away. The mind settles naturally on its own through the use of your mantra.
Can I learn TM from a book, YouTube, or an app? +
No. TM can only be learned from a certified teacher in a personal, one-on-one session. The reason is simple — your mantra is chosen specifically for you, and the instruction is tailored to your individual experience. This personal element is what makes TM work correctly and sets it apart from any self-guided practice.
How long before I notice results? +
Most people notice something has shifted from the very first session — a sense of calm, clarity, or lightness they hadn't expected. Deeper, cumulative benefits build over days and weeks of regular practice. Stress reduction, better sleep, and improved focus are typically among the first things people notice.
Who is TM suitable for? +
Anyone aged 10 and above — students, professionals, parents, seniors, beginners, and even skeptics. TM is practiced by over six million people worldwide across all backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life. If you have a mind, TM works for you.
Do I have to meditate twice a day? +
The recommendation is 20 minutes twice a day — once in the morning and once in the afternoon or evening. This rhythm gives the best results. That said, even one session a day brings real benefits. The key is regularity rather than perfection.
What is a mantra and will I have to keep it secret? +
Your mantra is a specific sound — not a word with meaning — chosen personally for you by your teacher. It is a vehicle for the mind to settle inward naturally. You are asked to keep it private, not because it is secret in a mysterious sense, but because sharing it casually can reduce its effectiveness for you.
Is TM suitable for people with anxiety or depression? +
Yes — TM is one of the most well-researched tools for anxiety and depression. Multiple peer-reviewed studies show significant reductions in both conditions with regular practice. We always recommend continuing to work with your healthcare provider alongside your TM practice.
